The Famous Tennis Coach, and former Scottish international player, Dr. Judy Murray, will be in Kenya, on her first private tour of Africa, and will be taking time off to lend her experience to Kenyan coaches at Sadili Oval in Langata on Saturday 10 August 2024.

Judy, who is best known by Kenyans as the parent and coach to 2 world #1’s Andy Murray and Jamie Murray, will be holding 2 free clinics at Sadili Oval on Saturday 10^th August 2024, with a press opportunity in afternoon from 5:00 p.m., at the same venue.

Her program will be as follows:

📅 Saturday 11:00 a.m.: Tennis for large numbers (maximum participation).

📅 Saturday 3:00 p.m.: Training coaches of all levels on how to engage players.

📅 5:00 p.m.: Q & A - Regarding coaching and Judy Story - parenting 2 world #1's in Andy & Jamie Murray.

About Dr. Judy Murray

Judy Murray is a former Scottish international tennis player with 64 national titles to her name. She became Scottish National Coach in 1995, the same year that she became the first woman to pass the Lawn Tennis Association's Performance Coach Award. She initiated the Scottish National Development Schools program targeting 20 kids aged 8 to 11, which ultimately produced four Davis Cup players and one Fed Cup player, including her Grand-Slam-winning sons, Jamie and Andy. In 2011 Judy was appointed Captain of the British Fed Cup and has used this role to grow the profile and numbers in women’s tennis as well as increase and improve the female coach workforce. Judy has developed several initiatives including Miss-Hits – a fun starter tennis program for girls aged 5–8 and Tennis on the Road – a mobile outreach program which takes tennis into areas of Scotland where the sport doesn't exist.

This is a global tennis program specifically designed for young girls aged 4-8 years, to introduce them to the sport in a fun and engaging way. It uses creative games and activities to teach basic tennis skills, enhance coordination and build confidence. It aims to make tennis appealing and accessible to young girls from an early age.

SADILI OVAL AFTER THE STORM

After weeks of relentless rain and recovery efforts, the Sadili Oval Sports Club is thrilled to announce the resumption of all tennis activities. The club's reopening is a testament to the enduring spirits of its members and the community.

 The road to recovery was paved with challenges. The club once waterlogged courts have been restored, thanks to the tireless work of the staff. 

“Seeing our courts ready for play again is incredibly rewarding,” shared club coach Mary.

 In anticipation of the reopening, the club has implemented several upgrades. Enhanced drainage systems, new court surfaces, and refurbished amenities await the members. 

“We are not just coming back, we are coming back stronger," said Dr.Elizabeth the G.M.

Most of our members have attested to the reopening of the club, and some of them have come to see if we are really opening.  

The Sadili Oval Sports Club's resumption of activities is more than a return to normalcy, it is a leap forward. With facilities and a united community, the club is set to serve up its best season yet.

Sadili Oval Sports Academy Celebrates the 2017 Day of the African Child

Sadili Oval Sports Academy on 16^th June 2017 joined the rest of the continent in celebrating this year’s edition of the Day of the African Child. This event was carried out in partnership with various organizations in Nairobi including Green Card Mtaani, Kibera Vision Achievers, Children International among others. Commemoration of the day was conducted under the theme ‘accelerating protection, empowerment and equal opportunities for children in Africa by 2030’, a reminder of the linkages between the regional and global agendas on development, and the importance of promoting child rights.

Hundreds of children marched through the streets of Kibera Slums, carrying hand-painted posters and placards calling on grown-ups in the country to take lead in creating a fair society that ensures they are protected from abuse and are given equal opportunities to succeed. After marching alongside a children’s band, they settled at Undugu grounds to take part in workshops, poetry and plays geared towards the theme of the event.

Sadili staff took it upon themselves to create awareness on the importance of practicing proper hygiene habits like hand washing and menstrual hygiene management. Both of these play a big role in the lives of children and adolescent girls, both biologically and culturally. Gender equity becomes an issue when girls lack appropriate menstrual hygiene education, affecting their health, dignity and education. Sadili through its Court of Dreams (WASH) programme is keen on improving the lives of young people  by promoting good hygiene habits, which are vital for their health and development.

“It has been a great day. This is the first time I am participating in such an event, and I didn’t even know there is a day set aside to celebrate us!” commented Fidelis Pendo, a std.3 pupil at Blessed Children’s centre in Kibera. “I enjoyed marching alongside the band and watching the plays,” he added. “I have also learnt that washing hands without soap after play does not kill all germs and we can still fall sick, unless we use soap.”

The Day of the African Child is celebrated every year to honour those who participated in South Africa’s Soweto Uprising when 10,000 black school children marched on June 16, 1976 in protest of the poor quality of their education. Hundreds were shot that day and many killed. On June 16th every year since 1991, governments, NGOs, international organisations and other stakeholders gather to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the full realization of the rights of children Africa. The day also raises awareness on the need for improvement of the education provided to African children.

Karen Tennis for Kibera

Karen Country Club will be holding a tennis tournament in aid of the construction of the Kibera tennis play space. The event is scheduled for tomorrow, 3rd Nov 2012 from 1.30  pm at the prestigious Karen Country Club, along Karen Rd. 

The funds raised are aimed at grading the ground where the kids train in the first phase of the establishment of the Kibera Tennis Center. Together with the Local community, Sadili Oval will be coordinating the project. At the moment this is just a sloping piece of land that needs a retaining wall and levelling.  Players will also bring any racquets, sports clothing etc that they no longer need.

Why Kibera?Over the years, Sadili Oval Sports Academy has been working to promote tennis as sport to the local people. Through these efforts, Kibera slums has continuously boasted talent to reckon with, especially in the under 18 yrs players. This project will therefore create a more convenient space for more children to develop their talent on the game, as well as source of recreation to keep them away from other social injustices.The surface will be used for tennis, basketball, and volleyball.

Evolve9 Building Tennis & Dreams At Sadili

Ronald Pothuizen, a director of kids tennis company, Evolve9, came to Kenya to run a tennis course for Tennis Tens coaches at Sadili Oval in 2010, and fell in love with the many children in our program, who attempted to play tennis on the side of a hill near Katwekera in Kibera with bats and old tennis balls. He committed immediately committed to building them four mini-courts at Sadili Oval, about 8 minutes away. The courts, when finished, would form a kids & fun centre, giving poor kids and their firends a chance to learn tennis, and learn about life too, by attending the community library nearby. The ground-breaking took place mid this year, and the excavation completed. This has been followed by filling with stone, machine compression, filling with murram and rolling with plenty of water. Then we have been ensuring that the surface is levelled and cared for as we await further fundraising through different ways to have the three final layers done, which will cost another 5,000 euros, and fencing/benches/nets/net posts, that will cost 1500 euros. Thank you to Evolve9 directors and special thanks to Ronald Pothuizen, who carried out a cross-country ski race to raise money to start the project, and continues to work hard talking to companies and friends to keep the fire alive.

Millfield Coaches Introduce Rugby

Safari Rugby Camp came light when Paul Reed arrived on the 13th August and took to the pitch for an exciting week of introducing rugby to young children from Sadili's programs. Paul to trains the extraordinarily successful U15 rugby teams at Millfield School, UK, quickly got onto Sadili Oval Sports Academy's pitch and introduced rugby to a group of Under 12 boys for the first time, and within one day, got them really keen and excited to play. He was joined by Millfield School's Sports Director, Dr. Graeme Maw. 
Both coaches are in Kenya as part of a partnership with Sadili Oval to develop sports, in partnership with Virgin Atlantic, Embassy of France, Tamarind, and Sarova Hotels Group, amongst others. Special mention must be made of the Embassy of France for supporting the start of a rugby school at Sadili, from which the program began.

Paul played rugby for Saracens, Cambridge University, England Students and Hong Kong. He has coached Cranleigh school 1st XV and 7's sides and Surrey county U15's -U18's but now focuses on developing U15 rugby players at Millfield and teaching Accounting and Economics. 


Graeme is Sports Director at Millfield School. Graeme attained Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees in sports science, physiology and management. He progressed to positions of performance manager or director with Queensland Swimming, British Triathlon and the Welsh Rugby Union, playing leading roles at multiple Olympic and Commonwealth Games along the way, and leading British Triathlon to the forefront of the world.

Smashers Challenge Cup Ends On A High Note

The 3^rd edition of the annual Safari Junior Tennis Camp concluded run by Sadili Oval at Karen Country Club, with Amadi Kagoma (Bur) beating Barakamfitiye Yusuf (Bur) in a closely contested final, 6-3 3-6 11-9, in the Boys 18s and Melissa Brown downing Chizi Mutsumi 6-3 6-7(4) 1—6 to lift the Girls Under 18s.

Gemma Gauntlett beat Alice Ayoma 6/3, while Emma Trent cleared Sheila Elizabeth our of the way 6/1 to set up a finalin which Gaunlett won 6-1 to take the girls Under 12 title.

In the boys under 14, favourite Sneha Kotecha beat Wycliffe Okenye 6-2 6-2 in the group stages before losing to Sylvester Juma 0-6 0-6 in the semis. Ronex Otieno was made to work and only just slipped through in his semi-final match against Wycliff Okenye, 6-2 2-6 10-8, then again meeting tough challenge in the finals, to beat Sylvester Juma 6-7(3) 6-6 10-8. The round robin tournament, which is a warm-up for the East Africa Junior Open, was well attended, with a total of 37 players between 12 and 18 years.

Safari Junior Tennis Camp Kicks off!!!

On Monday 6 2012 The Safari Junior Tennis Camp kicked off once again. It is the largest tennis camp in east and central Africa having hosted many children of different ages from 6 to 18 years. The camp is held at Sadili Oval Sports Club and has been going on for the last twelve years and has had many famous coaches come to volunteer including Paul Holbach former coach to Lindsay Davenport, William Murray former coach to the Williams Sisters, Former Cornell University Coach David Geatz, Dan James USTA national wheelchair tennis manager and many others.

This years expected top  players are; Fabrizio Caldarone and former world number 11 Ann Guerrant who has played against and beat players like Billie Jean King and Maria Navratilova. Mr. Caldarone has worked with famous players like Maria Sharapova, Ivan Ljubicic, David Ferrer, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Albert Costa, Guillermo Coria, Patrick Rafter, Nicolas Kiefer, Olivier Rochus, Dudi Sela, Davide Sanguinetti, Maria Sharapova,  and Nadia Petrova among others.

Mr. Caldarone is expected to jet in at 1220 on the 7th August, and will spend the first week of the camp working with Kenya’s own, Dr. Liz Odera and her team, on developing young local and regional talent

The East Africa Safari Junior Tennis Camp remains the regions premier platform for showcasing 80 of the region’s talent, and will, this year, have representation from Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Rwanda and Burundi. The Camp, sponsored by Virgin Atlantic, Carnivore, Professional Tennis Registry, Dartfish and Head, amongst others  and shall include the following activities:

Interviewing Kenya Team Olivier Kigotho

14 year old Olivier Kigotho has made the national team, barely one year after joining Sadili Talent Training Academy in Langata, Nairobi. Olivier will be representing Kenya at the ITF/CAT U14 Circuit in Burundi and Rwanda from the 6th - 17th August 2012. I caught up with Olivier at Sadili as he stepped off the court following a tough evening training session. For a boy so young, he exuded quiet confidence and smiled a lot, so I was able to plunge quickly into my interview:

J - Why did you switch from playing basketball to playing tennis competitively?

O – Well I had initially played tennis and then started playing basketball because it was closer to home, while I was in school in the USA. Then when I came back to Kenya, I started playing tennis again, because I liked it better.

J - How does it feel to be playing for the national team?

O – It feels really good, like my hard work is playing off.

J - When you started playing tennis again was it your goal to be on the National Team?

O - Not exactly but I didn’t think that I would be on the national team so quickly.

J - Do you have any short or long term goals for tennis?

O- For the short term I want to play well for the national team, and get into my academy team too (which is actually quite hard) and just keep playing well. And long term, I guess, get a tennis scholarship for a college.

J - in the USA? Europe?

O- I'm not really sure, still thinking about it! (smile)

J- Is there any area that you feel you improved on the last year? Or things you would like to see improve?

O - Im not really sure... (shrug)

J- So your are going to Burundi and Rwanda, how do you feel about competing there?

O - Quite nervous, actually

J - About anything in particular or just in general?

O - In general, but I also know most of the players, and its going to be tough.

J - Do you have any particular goals for these competitions? Winning the whole thing? Making it to quarters?

O - Not really just play my best I guess....I just want to stay focused on that, so I train hard

J-  What does it feel like being able to travel to other countries doing something you love?

O – It feels good! I have been exposed to different kinds of places and players. I think its the most important part. I have learned a lot.

J- Which are some of the countries you have played tennis competitions in since you joined Sadili?

O - the UK, Uganda, Burundi, Rawanda, and, well Kenya...

J- Is there a country that you would love to visit for a competition?

O- Yes! Spain, I've heard it has good players and its very nice place! (laugh)

Kenyan Teresa Odera Earns US Conference Honors

Teresa Odera this year made Kenyans proud by earning Conference honors with a 18-2 win-loss in her singles and going undefeated in her GPAC doubles matches in the conference matches this season, earning her a 1^st team all-conference award in both categories. Teresa who earned first team all-conference honors in singles' and doubles' play; posting a 9-11 overall record at #2 singles and combined with partner Frankie Eszes to finished 15-5 at #1 doubles; went undefeated within the GPAC (Great Plains Athletic Conference) in doubles' play. Colleges that Northwestern have posted wins against include Concordia and Doane in Fremont, Neb. The Red Raiders defeated the Bulldogs 6-3 and then knocked off Doane by an impressive 9-0 score. Other college teams that fell included Midlands University (Terry Odera (7-7) def. Hannah Archibald, 6-0, 6-0), Central (Terry Odera def. Chelsea Johnson 6-4, 6-2) and Simpson College (Terry Odera def. Tiffany Bost (SIMW) 6-2, 2-6, 10-7), Northwestern finished the regular season with a 5-2 conference record, 10-10 overall. Northwestern went 5-1 during the final two weeks of the regular season to finish third in the GPAC with a 5-2 record, 10-10 overall. It marks the best finish for the Red Raiders since the 2002 season.

SADILI SOCCER DOWNS LAVINGTON

Sadili Oval Soccer Academy's John Macharia, led the Under 15 team to defend their title today, with this season at the Left Foot Sports Soccer League that will run through July and August this year, trouncing favorites Lavington Primary 2 -1 in the Under 15, with Macharia netting the first goal and team mate Jama, the second.

Sadili's Jamin Luvembe Makes A First to Davis Cup From Kibera

Jamin Luvembe becomes the first tennis player from Kibera, Africa's largest slum, to play Davis Cup when he joins the Kenya team in Tunisia on the 1st of July 2012. 

Jamin was called in at the last minute to play trials at Nairobi Club, started out as the underdog, but rallied to win all his group-stage matches, qualifying for the semifinals as a firm candidate, and ending up as the runnerup, and 4th player for the team after Ibrahim Kibet. Other other two positions were not contested for, as KLTA had already selected  Faiz and Ishmael Changawa of Mombasa. Ishmael is currently the best ranked junior and has posted impressive results in ITF tournaments. Jamin, who is a student at Malezi School, started playing tennis at 8 years, when his brother, Francis Isiaho, introduced him to Sadili Oval Sports Academy. His sponsor and coach, Dr. Liz Odera says "this is Jamin's dream starting to come true. He has proved that committment and hard work pays. He still has a lot to do to become the player we hope to see, but this is a great step ib gaining experience, and we are very proud of him". Jamin has been put on standby, as funds are awaited for from the government, according to KLTA, so Kenyans may have to wait a little longer if he doesn't travel. Kenya will be play against some great teams, including Ghana, Nigeria, Tunisia, Benin, Zimbabwe, and Cote d'Ivoire. Kenya has barely managed to stay in Group 3 and it is hoped that, by exposing juniors like Ishmael and Jamin, the experience will pay off in a few years.

Zack Okong'o Selected For Basketball Without Borders

Malezi Captain and Sadili Talent Training Academy student, Zack Okong'o Basil, was recently selected by the Kenya Basketball Federation as one of two players to represent Kenya at the Basketball Without Borders Training Camp to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 30th August to 2nd September 2012. Says 6ft 4' Zack, who plays Shooting Guard, "This is a great opportunity for me, I promise to do my best to prepare and be able to represent myself, my school and my country to the best of my ability". Zack's Coach Joseph Amoko, who was very pleased with the selection and said, "Zack is within the right age bracket required for this camp, and has already proved himself, leading his team to the Provincial Play-offs in March".

Malezi Attend French Rugby Tournament

On Saturday 26th of May 2012,the Malezi School and Rugby Academy were invited at the ASTERIX n OBELIX 7s tournament that was held at Jamhuri park's main arena which also doubles up as the home ground of Nondescript Rugby Club.

We arrived at the venue at 9 and had 45min of registration of the team and rules and regulations of the tournament since it was a unique type of game.the rules and regulations of the game are attached.

We were pooled against Rift Valley Academy, the red buffaloes, Gaulous and The Romans

With 1 win and a point difference of -1at the pool stage we finished the pool as the 3rd team and therefore out of 5 teams,we qualified for the plate semifinals against Bquinz.After 2 halves of 14min, Bqinz won the match 2-1 and went ahead to win the plate final against The French School

RECOMMENDATIONS

The are that the boys are really getting to understand the the game better and better and all they need is more exposure to such tournaments and we shall definitely be a force to recon with.

Top seed Mariam Mujawimana (Burundi) today stumbled, losing her lead to unseeded Kenyan Cherryl Fuasso 4/6 6/1 2/6 today, at Sadili Oval's Court 1, opening the quarter to an exciting Kenya-Mauritius semi-final match tomorrow between Cherryl and Chan Tam Neng Mael in the Girls Under 14s, at the 2nd leg of the ITF/CAT East Africa tournament, Cherryl becomes the first Kenyan to reach a semi-finals in the tournament, 1st leg runner-up, Rotimi Adetunji (Congo B), has reached the semi-finals, and awaits the result of a tough quarterfinal battle between unseeded Tonia Kubai (Kenya) and 1st leg winner, Amelie Boy (Mauritius),

In the Boys Under 14s, seeds continued as expected, with Burundi taking three out of the 4 semi-final spots. Second seed and 1st leg champion, Shebani Kabura, easily dipatched of Chikanda Alosha (Zimbabwe) 6/1 6/4; 3rd seed Shabani Kassalo and first seed Saidi Nkurunziza were pushed, but did not collapse, winning against Jules Ndimwami (Rwanda) 7/5 6/2 and Ntaba Rajabu (Burundi) 6/3 6/4, respectively. Talented 4th seed Erneste Habyambere (Rwanda) took the final semi-final berth, winning in a tough encounter against favoured Dean Dulthummon (Mauritius) 6/1 6/7 (6) 7/6 (1).

In the boys Under 12, Damien Laporte (Seychelles) made short work of Ryan Randiek 6/1 6/1, setting up an interesting semi-final match against Dennis Moses (Zimbabwe), who won easily against Albert Njogu (Kenya) 6/1 6/0, Second seed Albert Mugisha (Burundi) also made short work of Shaun Andriamaro (Seychelles) 6/0 6/0 to reach the semi-finals, awaiting the results of the quarterfinal match between Kenyans Keean Shah and Geoffrey Ogega.

The Girls under 12s, have seeds unbeaten, with top seed Aisha Niyonkuru (Burundi) dispatching with Esther Wahome (Kenya) 6/1 6/2, and 2nd seed Tayo Adetunji (Congo B) sweeping away 4th seed Mwamini Bitungwa (Burundi) 6/0 6/0, to set up yet another exciting finals. tomorrow.
