The Famous Tennis Coach, and former Scottish international player, Dr. Judy Murray, will be in Kenya, on her first private tour of Africa, and will be taking time off to lend her experience to Kenyan coaches at Sadili Oval in Langata on Saturday 10 August 2024.

Judy, who is best known by Kenyans as the parent and coach to 2 world #1’s Andy Murray and Jamie Murray, will be holding 2 free clinics at Sadili Oval on Saturday 10^th August 2024, with a press opportunity in afternoon from 5:00 p.m., at the same venue.

Her program will be as follows:

📅 Saturday 11:00 a.m.: Tennis for large numbers (maximum participation).

📅 Saturday 3:00 p.m.: Training coaches of all levels on how to engage players.

📅 5:00 p.m.: Q & A - Regarding coaching and Judy Story - parenting 2 world #1's in Andy & Jamie Murray.

About Dr. Judy Murray

Judy Murray is a former Scottish international tennis player with 64 national titles to her name. She became Scottish National Coach in 1995, the same year that she became the first woman to pass the Lawn Tennis Association's Performance Coach Award. She initiated the Scottish National Development Schools program targeting 20 kids aged 8 to 11, which ultimately produced four Davis Cup players and one Fed Cup player, including her Grand-Slam-winning sons, Jamie and Andy. In 2011 Judy was appointed Captain of the British Fed Cup and has used this role to grow the profile and numbers in women’s tennis as well as increase and improve the female coach workforce. Judy has developed several initiatives including Miss-Hits – a fun starter tennis program for girls aged 5–8 and Tennis on the Road – a mobile outreach program which takes tennis into areas of Scotland where the sport doesn't exist.

 

About Miss-Hits

This is a global tennis program specifically designed for young girls aged 4-8 years, to introduce them to the sport in a fun and engaging way. It uses creative games and activities to teach basic tennis skills, enhance coordination and build confidence. It aims to make tennis appealing and accessible to young girls from an early age.

Sadili Oval Sports Academy Celebrates 2017 Global Handwashing Day

On 13^th October 2017, hundreds of pupils from 9 Primary schools in Kibera and their teachers gathered at Magoso Primary in Kibera for an early celebration of this year’s edition of Global Handwashing Day. This event was made possible through partnership between various organizations and institutions in Nairobi including Sadili Oval Sports Academy, Savo Foundation and the Ministry of Health among others. The Ministry of Health was represented by Public Health Officers from Nairobi’s Kibera and Lang’ata areas. This year’s Global Handwashing Day theme was ‘Our Hands, Our Future’,  reminding us that handwashing protects our own health, but also allows us to build our own futures, as well as those of our communities, and the world.

The event commenced with an introduction of this year’s theme and a brief explanation on what it means to everyone- both children and adults. This was followed by a short question and answer session where the pupils were given an opportunity to show how much they know about hand hygiene. For each correct answer, a piece of soap was given to a child.

One of the messages stressed during the event was the 5 critical times of handwashing: after visiting the toilet, before eating, after changing the baby’s nappy, before cooking and before feeding the baby.

The pupils were all surprised that a simple act of handwashing during these critical times could save them from catching so many diseases. The discussions were then followed by a handwashing demonstration where the children were taken through all the steps involved in proper handwashing.

Finally, bar soaps and leaky tins were donated to all the schools that attended the event. The leaky tins were donated courtesy of Sadili Oval Sports Academy.

Prior to this day, Sadili Oval Sports Academy through its Court of Dreams (WASH) project had been conducting weekly hand washing campaigns in 4 of the schools participating in the project in Kibera. A similar campaign was done during a tennis tournament held at Sadili Oval grounds on 7th October 2017 (http://sadiliovalnews.blogspot.co.ke/2017/10/hand-washing-campaign-embraced-at.html ). All these were done as build-up activities for the Global Handwashing Day, officially marked by the whole world on 15th October.

Court of Dreams uses tennis to promote good health among children under the age of 10. One of its major focus areas is promotion of good hand hygiene practices- an idea that is globally accepted considered as the easiest and cheapest way of preventing many illnesses. 

Global Handwashing Day is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

 

Internship Success Story 5: Trizah Mboya's Story

We are always proud of interns and volunteers who commit to their work and end up having fulfilling and worthwhile experiences. Meet Trizah Mboya, a 2^nd Year student at South Eastern Kenya University who recently completed her internship at Sadili and is now back to School. A beneficiary of Girl Power Clubs Africa program, Trizah has a lot of positive things to say about her experience. Here is her story:

“My name is Trizah Mboya, a former intern at Sadili Oval Sports Academy. I came to know about Sadili through their program Girl Power Clubs Africa back when I was still in class 7 at St. Michael’s Holy Unity Academy. Throughout the program I learnt a lot during the sessions that they had in the school. I have been able to learn a lot more during my internship at Sadili which has also widened my thinking and attitude on lots of things.

Throughout my stay in Sadili under the Court of Dreams program, I loved my experience with Mary Rice School- a school for special needs children. Despite their conditions, these children were so full of life. Their smiles, their happiness and positive attitude towards life were a big lesson to me. They taught me that despite any situation we maybe in life, we should always appreciate and love life. The court of dreams program has also been helpful as I engaged in data entry and also data collection which was really a fun thing to do and teaching of the daily lives. I have also been able to learn tennis as a sport which was one of the things I least expected to develop an interest in, but I have found it as a great and now as one of my favorite games. I have experienced a lot through the programs they have been conducting. The most exciting and important part is the relation with the people in the community. Although it was a challenge at first, I found it more exciting since it also gave me the tips of handling different people, accepting and appreciating the people living around us. This has made me strong and I have learnt to persevere more and also be ready to work in any environment.

Under Girl Power program I also had the chance to talk to girls like me and share different experiences of our daily lives. Women empower each other. I learnt a lot from the girls as we would talk openly of every situation we’ve faced as girls. I also admit that I learnt from the girls from their questions and answers. The different topics we’ve been sharing together like Leadership, Menstruation, Discipline and among others showed impact afterwards from the girls. I loved their company and how they will bring up one another to fight challenges.

Sadili has raised a platform in my life as I went through new discoveries, meeting new people and engaging with the community. I thank Sadili for inviting me in their programmes to work with them and gain good experiences from the programs. I am looking forward to practice everything taught here in Sadili in my daily life especially working with children.”

Hand Washing Campaign Embraced at Sadili 8-Series Challenge 7

It was yet another fantastic tournament at Sadili Oval as we hosted the 8-Series Challenge 7 on Saturday, 7^th October 2017. 59 kids drawn mainly from the Court of Dreams program and living in Kibera and Lang’ata’s Kijiji area gathered to showcase their skills at the half-day tournament. 

The event kicked off at 9:00am and Sadili staff, who were also the organizers took charge as the referees. The young kids kept everyone entertained as they all clearly struggled to win.

This particular tournament was out of the ordinary as Sadili staff set aside some time after playing to create awareness on proper hand washing habits. All the kids sat down with their coaches for a short but highly informative life skills session that touched on the importance of washing hands and the steps involved in hand washing. This was done in the spirit of the Global Hand Washing Day that is scheduled for October 15^th. “Many kids in the Court of Dreams program already know how to wash their hands, but there are still a good number that do not. Besides, we have to keep reminding even the ones who know,” remarked Joy Akim, the staff who took lead in facilitating the session.

Kids Show of Skills at Sadili 8-Series Challenge 6

Sadili Oval on Saturday 2^nd September 2017 hosted the Sadili 8-Series Challenge 6, a free-entry event that has become a cherished monthly staple for many kids under age 12 in Kibera, as well as Kijiji- a small informal settlement in Lang’ata. The 40 kids were excited to play at Sadili and the tournament went on as planned.

On arrival at Sadili, the kids were first divided according to their ages and the matches swiftly followed. The kids, many of them new tennis learners, kept everyone entertained as they relentlessly tried their best to show their skills in the game.

The tournament organizers, Sadili staff, were satisfied with the games played even though many children didn’t show up for the event. To them, it was fulfilling that the children that participated had a platform to show their talents as they enjoyed themselves.

The Sadili 8- Series Junior Tennis Challenge is a tournament for U6, U8, U10 & U12 kids (all levels), with Tennis Africa Cup ranking. It is great for kids who want to test their games, get out on the court and make new friends along the way. It was initiated by Tennis professional, Dr. Liz Odera.
