Second Empower My Life ToT workshop Held at Sadili Oval

Sadili Oval Sports Academy in partnership with Swiss Academy for Development (SAD) held a 5-day training of trainers (ToT) workshop at Sadili Oval from 3rd to 8th July 2017, the second of its kind since a similar workshop was first held in March 2017. The workshop was also supported by AMREF’s department of Children and Adolescents & Gender Based violence and it brought together a total of 18 participants including pupils from Kid Star Primary School, Nazarene Primary School and St. Catherine Primary School; 2 teachers each from Nazarene and Kid Star Primary Schools and Sadili staff. It was facilitated by Sarah Vogtli of SAD.

The purpose of the workshop was to train trainers on the implementation of Empower My Life programme that has been running in various schools in Kibera since the first camp held in April 2017 at Sadili Oval.

The week-long training covered areas including Sexual Violence, HIV/AIDS, Gender Equality, Bystander intervention and Life skills. Each of these discussions was accompanied by several games that were practised in the field. Participants discussed their experiences from the camp held in April and made changes on areas that would make easier the implementation of another camp scheduled for August 2017.

On the third day of workshop, Ms. Monica Naliaka, a nurse from AMREF who is also a specialist in gender based violence gave an insight on sexual violence particularly in the following areas: How to identify an abused child, how to handle an abused child and how to deal with cases of child abuse.
Empower My Life is a sport and play-based, innovative and holistic 16-months prevention program contributing to the fight against sexual violence against girls and boys in Kenyan schools. It promotes the right for education and health for girls and boys.
Through a partnership between the Swiss Academy for Development (SAD) based in Biel, Switzerland and Sadili Oval Sports Academy based in Nairobi, Kenya, the project runs in Kibera. It targets 200 girls and 200 boys from underprivileged backgrounds, 40 teachers and about 800 family members.
The project is in line with objectives of the Kenyan government to prevent sexual violence and HIV / AIDS and integrates relevant government institutions.

Empower My Life Training Camp Kicks Off at Sadili Despite Chilly Weather

The long awaited 10-day Empower My Life Training camp for kids organized by Sadili Oval Sports Academy in partnership with Swiss Academy for Development (SAD) officially kicked off on Tuesday, 18th April 2017 at Sadili Oval grounds in Nairobi. Despite the heavy morning downpour, kids turned up and braved the chilly weather to participate in the camp.

Sadili staff did a commendable job ensuring that all activities of the day were carried out as had been scheduled. This being the first day of the training camp, the better part of the day was spent on registration, familiarizing the kids with what they should expect during the camp, playing fun games, filling in basic questionnaires and colouring body maps.

“The day turned out to be more fun than I had expected. I enjoyed the games, the food and colouring pictures,” remarked 9 year old Bellemy Ochieng’, a std. 3 pupil at Old Kibera Primary school. “I will definitely come back tomorrow and every day until the last day of the camp.”

Even though the targeted number of 400 kids was not attained, the facilitators were happy about how everything turned out. “I am happy that a good number of kids turned up in spite of the cold and unfavourable weather. I’m very hopeful that many more will come as the days go by, and that we will surpass our target number of 400,” remarked Joy Akim, the lead facilitator.

Areas to be covered during this training camp include: 1) Knowledge-transfer about sexual violence, HIV/AIDS and relevant health topics (e.g. hygiene); 2) Understanding of gender equality and 3) Supporting the increase of civil courage (bystander intervention). The camp goes on until Friday, 28th April before it picks up again in August 2017.

Malezi School are District Champions

Zack Okong'o received trophy

Coach Nico, Captain Zack and teacher Nickson
The Lang’ata District has crowned Malezi School as this year’s district champions this weekend at the AMREF training facility and it was memorable. The game was as intense as a world championship-boxing bout with both teams going head to head for the title and the opportunity to represent their district at the County level.

Sunshine Academy came out the gates with a full engine of steam, going up quickly 04-00 against the favourites: Malezi High School. But that was brought to a halt, when coach Nick, of the Malezi team, called a time-out and substituted Eddy Amos, a freshman, in the game to facilitate the Box & 1 defense to contain Sunshine’s Churchil Otieno (11).

With the treat contained the Malezi team took back the momentum and erupted taking the lead. Going on a 13-point run the Malezi boys ended the half 24-11, with rejuvenated confidence and focus.

The second half, as the fans would confer, was the ‘Malezi Show’, with John Madol (7) taking command of the charge. The team rallied behind their newfound leader, overcoming the loss of injured captain Zack Okong’o, and finished the game in championship style.

Leading Scorers:
Lual Mathiang           19-points, 15-rebounds, 3-steals
Fred Odhiambo         16-points, 16-rebounds, 5-blocks
John Madol               10-points, 5-assissts, 5-rebounds, 6-steals

The medals, trophy and certificates were awarded to the best team, Malezi High School, in the Lang’ata district and were honored to represent the District in the County tournament.

All is well that ends well, but for the Malezi team it is only the beginning.

14 Sep 2011 NBA Africa partners with KBF/Malezi/Sadili To Offer First Coach Workshop

Court time: Coach Wright Elaborates On A Point

The Sadili Oval Sports Academy on 14th September 2011 hosted a world – class basketball clinic in conjunction with Kenya Basketball Federation, NBA Africa, Malezi College (Department of Sports, Recreation and Physical Education) and the famous basketball brand- Sprite.
Sadili boasts of having been the development platform for some of East Africa's basketball players who now play in the NBA and in the NCAA, honed their skills. The Malezi College also stands tall in being one of the premier institutions offering sports coaching and sports management courses in all sports at an affordable rate to coaches nationwide. Kenya Basketball federation, the nation’s basketball managing body is credited for having brought competitive basketball back into Kenya and as a result turned the sport into semi- professional. KBF’s resilience and hard work has attracted the corporate world into the game with  teams in within the major leagues.

Manyo chats with Nellie of Brookhouse School
The clinic at Sadili was run by re-knowned NBA Coach Wright and his South African-based NBA Africa counterpart John Manyo-Plange, and attracted a total of 48 coaches and referees. With 38 of the coaches being male and the other 10 being women, the facilitating coaches lauded the KBF and Sadili for having brought in women in a male dominated sport. Among the key skills taught by Coach Wright were offensive performance, defensive performance, player and coach attitude. Perhaps to note the main ingredient of their teachings was work ethic. In this segment of the clinic delivered by Coach Wright, coaches were exposed to a module that developed their mindset and also worked on their players’ mindset towards the game. ‘The main aim is winning, a player who is not interested in winning is as good as the bench’- Coach Wright. He went ahead to explain the reason for proper organizing of training sessions, prevention of injury and player conditioning within his module. In concluding their presentations both Toby Wright and Manyo-Plange expressed optimism in the local coaches being able to nurture more youngsters with the learn the skills and as a result provide the much needed new crop of players for the international basketball scene. They also expressed their interest in exploring ways to work with Sadili Oval and Malezi College, in the near future, as partners in developing basketball in Kenya. They were impressed by the commitment to sport, player, and facility development in 21 years.

Hot weather, long hours, but no-one is complaining!
Sprite has been in the Kenyan Hoops circles since 2003, creating basketball links between Kenya and the outside world and also offering an avenue for graffiti artists and Kenyan Hip- hop artists to showcase their skills. It is in August 2009 that the Sprite Slam series was officially launched in Kenya and ever since, players and coaches alike have been made to realize that basketball should be approached from a more sophisticated angle. The best of shows was put on display at the University of Nairobi courts on 16th August 2011.  Despite the rain coming down and soaking the courts, the top 40 players as selected by KBF worked extensively to showcase their 3 on 3 skills in front of a charged spectator presence.

Happy Faces Of Enlightened Coaches: "We Want More" they all say...a challenge to the organisers!

Sadili Oval Basketball Academy players had a wonderful surprise when, world famous NBA basketball player, Glen Rice (rtd), landed at their court during a quiet Sunday practice session. LA Lakers supporter and Malezi School's 3rd Man, Zack Okong'o exclaimed, "Its unbelievable, who would have thought that such great people can come to see such simple people like us, now I know that anything is possible." Glen spent about 40 minutes at the simple court, training the players and giving each of them his thoughts on how to improve. Amadou Fall, V-P NBA in Africa said that he was impressed and hoped to get more linkages for the academy and players in the near future. Says Academy Director Liz Odera, "I was so excited to have such wonderful visitors, I forgot to take pictures! Seriously? I have talked about one day something like this happening years ago, and when it began to happen, I was swept up in the excitement like a kid".

19 March 2011: Tree planting and Semi-finals

BRAZIL KENYA FOOTBALL LEAGUE SEMI FINALS RESULTS MEDIA RELEASE

Ligi Ndogo 2 Nature and Sports 0

Chris Kibet must have got the better of goalkeeper Levis Osena’s loss of concentration when his superbly carved freekick deflected against Brian Bwire’s head to slither into the net in the 14th minute. He went ahead to strike a neat drive into the back of the net at the 27th minute when Brian Bwire failed to contain his increasing pressure. On the other hand Kennedy Moya could see his slow drive being cleared at the edge of the area when all was clear for a goal that could have sealed the game for the Nature and sports in the 16th minute. Ball possession may be an art unique to nature and sports but their goal hungry traits were switched off in this encounter.

Sadili Sports for Life Celebrate Goal
Sports For Life 3 Lavington United 0
Jamin Luvembe, Charles Onyansi and Jesse Mwendia got the best of the already back-trotting Lavington United side that only showed quality in perseverance character. Charles Onyansi slotted in the Penalty at the 5th minute when Jamin Luvembe was brought down inside the area. Mwendia Jesse shook the net in the 19th minute after a neat pass from Duncan Ochieng. Jamine Luvembe then sealed
Lavington’s fate in the 36th minute when he headed home an unpredicted cross.

12 March 2011: Sadili Teams Qualify in Quarterfinals of Brazil Kenya League

Two Sadili Oval teams, Sports for Life and Nature and Sports, sailed through their quarterfinal matches at Langata High School
Young Talents 2 Ligi Ndogo 3
The warm equatorial morning would set stage for a one sided affair between these two teams who have always met at the top league. The best of matches of the day would see Kaka’s Charges miss two very important chances that would have left Ligi licking their wounds .Brian Ochieng, George Mwendwa scored for the Young Talents and Chris Ogutu’s 2 and Julian’s 1 sealed the deal.
Sports for life 4 Milimani Primary 0
Kevin Owino’s 2 goals, Charles Maguto’s 1 and Erick Onyango’s 1 could see a hapless Milimani primary out of the prestigious trophy. But the future is beckoning for Sports for Life. An easy match at the quarters may cause them trouble at the hot semis next week. Lets wait and see.
Lavington United 2 Hope Stars 0
Wario Wako and Felix Njuguna’s goals would lead the pack in tormenting the Hope Stars goalkeeper’s confidence. The duel became so tense that even the referee mistakenly handed out a yellow card in place of the suspension card. The midday sun not only did shine on Lavington United but also worked to scorch the Hope Stars.
St. Pauls 1 Nature and Sports 3
Tightest game of the day. Age verification and careful officiating became a necessity in this game that saw the teams proceed to post match penalties just after a 60 minute low shot from St. Paul’s John Mwangi that would have seen Nature and Sports out. It was curled so neatly that Javiras Okwanyo had to stretch his fingertips to deflect it into the side net. St. Pauls only converted one of their chances while Nature and Sports saw all their 3 spot kicks safely past the goalie and into the net.
Semi final action action continues next Saturday 19th March 2011 at Langata High School.
