The August Holiday Camp

A session on how to hold the racket
The holiday camp was carried out from the 20th  of August to the 31st at the Kibera tennis court. Most of our participants being children under the age of 10 years.Being the holiday season the turn up was great as most of the children were not going to school thus attending the August holiday camp.
Life skills sessions and sports sessions were the main activities being carried out during the holiday camp.Under life skills, the emphasis was on WASH activities and some of the sessions carried out in the two weeks camp included ;Hand washing(Steps of hand washing,When to wash hands and the importance of washing hands),Keeping the environment clean,Brushing teeth and Cholera.
In sports tennis was the main game being played and most of the players being new faces the coach had to start with the basics of tennis that is;How to hold the racket,How to swing backhand and forehand,How to hit and roll the ball. She was however impressed as most of the children were fast learners and were picking up the skills really fast, with the help of the older squad kids she was able to run her sessions with the large number of young ones who showed up.
Learning how to roll
Immediately the children saw coach Adongo carrying porridge and heading down to Kibera tennis court they  would immediately swarm up the place ready for the sessions with their cups and plates for porridge and sweet potatoes or 'KDF' which was being served after every session. ''I am really grateful for the holiday camp as it has really helped my children as she refers to them, some have even come and confessed how they used to use the same basin to wash their utensils and again shower with it but now they have a separate basin for doing dishes and showering which is a good thing .For my old players, their tennis skills have greatly improved and for the new players they have gained some skills and with consistency in training they will be as good as the others.Am also happy about the food that was being offered at the end of the session as it tremendously contributed to the huge turnout of children thus being able to teach life skills and tennis to many children",said Coach Adongo during a short interview with her.

The weird fun game.

This is a weird game, is how one beginner described the Tennis game.Tennis is not a very common game in our communities. It is perceived to be a rich man’s game. Our community project in Kibera is meant to nature young tennis players from the slum into exceptional players. They are introduced into the game at a young age in our community court and graduate to the Sadili Oval Sports club where they get seasoned further. We have worked hard over the years to produce players who have joined the tennis national team.
Many children of different age groups who encounter the game, the first time do not understand it. They ask questions about the rackets and ball that always fascinate them. Since they can hold the racket and hit the ball, most of the balls fly out of the court and into the nearby Nairobi River. The child is then left wondering, what did I just do? You should see their face then.

Training session after school hours is fun and requires a lot of attention. They are taught on how to hold the racket properly `say hello racket?’.They are also taught how to swing the racket properly `draw a letter C’ the coach instructs. These take some time to perfect. They keep forgetting and are reminded by the coach. This is followed by foot work, the different tennis hits, serving and counting. Counting is the weirdest. We don’t say 0 point but we say love. We do not count the normal way as from 1,2,3,4 consecutively but  we start from love,15,30,40 and game.  All this is very unusual as you continue to learn the game.
Soon they learn to play the game. It is so much fun. They can now count and know when there is an advantage. They know when the serve is a fault and give room for a second serve. They know how to control the balls that once flew out of the court. The game now is so much fun that every Saturday they play each other find the king and or queen of the court. They now understand that even with good skills you need to be smart to win.
It is indeed a weird and fun game.

Safe spaces!

Safes paces are free of prejudice; they promote inclusion, communication, participation for all. They are intentionally created to give room to all especially those that would be left out. They are avenues where all disenfranchised beings will feel welcomed.
Safe spaces are assumed to be very easy to create. That with guidance from our culture, constitution, policies, rules and religion to mention a few, we are able to create safe spaces for all to live and let others live. These are among the many encounters that we have at our community court, and the community
Mary arrives in the morning at the court with a swollen eye. It is so red and she seems to be in pain. The coach enquirers about the eye and she says `` Mum beat me because I went to the shop and bought something different.” ``Is that the only reason the coach insists?’’  ``Yes she says ‘’ the coach trying to comfort Mary says `` Mum need to be reported.” ``Mary agrees nodding her head and says `` I don’t know why she beats me so bad?’’
On different occasion walking through the community we find a parent seriously canning some children. The coach confronts the parent to stop the act. She tells them that what they are doing is not helpful to the child. Others join in the discussion wondering who we are. One says `` our children are very naughty, my own is worse. How will we mould them if we do not Cain / beat? Yes, another added, tell us? They do not listen or follow our instructions.” We look at each other, and coach said ``okay enough of the beating the children have heard you.’’ After a short discussion one parent agrees to think about it.  Another says `` in my house I beat the properly. They know. ’’

I once participated in a training that involved head teachers and coaches. As they were being trained for a holiday camp that was to take place soon for the children, it was clear that some the head teachers wanted to make their schools safer for their pupils. The teachers said `` they know we cannot touch them and if we did we will be punished.’’ That they had put in place strict rules to ensure this. Having interacted with the children in this school, they were outspoken and confident but lacked respect even for their teachers.
Creation of safe spaces is intended for all. The responsibility of the individual in creation of safe spaces as consumer and initiator should be clearly understood for us to achieve the intended end goal `safe spaces’. Safe spaces should be everywhere, in the school wash rooms, at the dining table, in a community play ground , our roads,  in the market place at the, at the bus stop. The individual should be responsible for it knowing that we all are challenged in different ways.
Does it not surprise you how children who do not know each other meet and play together? That is how beautiful a safe space is. It is filled with peace, contentment, understanding, smiles and many other good things.

Everyone is vulnerable in a setting strange to them. Therefore strive to create safe spaces for they will help include you and all children.

The Court of Dreams Uses Sports to Make a Positive Impact on the Lives of Children: St. Peter’s Story

Situated on the edge of Kibera slums in Nairobi, St. Peter’s Primary and Nursery School is one of the schools participating in Sadili Oval Sports Academy’s Court of Dreams programme. The school was founded in 2011 by Mr. Titus Ndonga who is now the director and Ms. Clare Amachari, who is the head teacher.

Like most schools in Kibera, pupils at St. Peter’s learn under very poor conditions. With a population of 60 pupils from nursery to Std. 4, the school has only 3 teachers (including the head teacher). All the 60 pupils learn in the same room, barely partitioned using old rags. Outside the building they call school is a foul smelling stream of stagnant water that is full of litter.

Despite these circumstances, the school’s head teacher has chosen to focus on the positive side: the fact that things have been getting better ever since she had the school enrolled on the Court of Dreams programme.

“I can’t help but notice how much change there has been in these pupils since our school joined the programme. I’m very glad that staff from Sadili often teach them what we don’t have time to teach. We focus so much on teaching them Math and English and Swahili while we forget basics like hand washing, nail-cutting and showering,” says Ms. Amachari. “It is not uncommon for me to meet a parent outside there who is curious to know who has been teaching their child how to wash their hands, because they too have noticed a change. Not too long ago I met one whose son always insists on using soap, something she found very unusual of him!”

Ms. Clare Amachari, Head teacher
A part from these important life skills, Ms. Amachari is happy that the children can now go out to play, at least once a week, thanks to Sadili’s playground (Kibera Tennis Court) set aside for kids in the programme. “We are also very grateful that these kids now have a field to play. Our school is in an extremely squeezed environment and we feel very privileged to have a place for them to play. They always get very excited when it’s time to come to the tennis court,” says the head teacher, “We hope the programme is here to stay.”

A group of pupils in class
Mr. Ndonga and Ms. Amachari founded the school with the aim of helping parents to bear the burden of school fees. St. Peter’s Primary School pupils come from underprivileged family backgrounds, mainly with single parents. The pay very little school fees, just enough to keep the school running. The younger ones in nursery school pay KES 300 (USD 3) per month while those in primary school pay KES 400 (USD 4) per month. Total orphans learn for free.

Learning to play tennis at the Kibera Tennis Court
St. Peter’s is just one of the many schools in Kibera with problems ranging from inadequate teachers to poor learning environments. The Court of Dreams may not solve all these problems, but we are glad that the programme is slowly making a difference in the lives of the children involved, and that the teachers and their parents have noticed this difference. Knowing that these children’s lives are getting better every day gives us a sense of purpose, and is motivation enough to keep us going.

Sadili 8-Series Challenge No. 7 Presents a Great Weekend of Tennis

Sadili 8-series tournaments have become a staple for kids under the age of 12, especially those in Sadili’s Court of Dreams programme. On Saturday 8th October 2016 , the trend continued and a record of  78 boys and girls gathered to participate in the  Sadili 8-Series challenge no. 7. Having considered the fact that most kids in the court of dreams programme live in Kibera, this time the younger groups (under 6 and under 8) played at Sadili’s Kibera tennis courts as the older ones (under 10 and under 12) played at Sadili Oval’s tennis courts. It was a very sunny weekend in Nairobi, but the kids made the day interesting and fun with their wonderful prowess in the game. Sadili Staff did great work organising the kids into teams and shortly after their registration, matches got swiftly underway.

Run under a Sadili/International Inspiration partnership, this tournament was proudly sponsored by Wilson Sporting Goods, Sadili Oval, Comic Relief as well as volunteer coach Kent Smith from the USA who had recently visited Sadili to offer free tennis training to kids in the court of dreams programme.
