We Stand with Kenyans and Call for Change

Source: CNN

Kenya is currently facing a tumultuous period marked by widespread protests and civil unrest. President William Ruto's recent condemnation of the protests, labeling them as "treasonous," has done little to address the root causes of the public's outrage. The demonstrations, sparked by a controversial finance bill proposing tax hikes, have seen the country gripped by violence and bloodshed, with at least five people dead and many more injured.

Despite the government's attempts to pacify the situation by scrapping certain tax increases, the protests have continued, driven by the rising cost of living and economic hardships faced by many Kenyans. The movement, known as "7 Days of Rage," reflects the deep-seated frustration and anger among the populace.

Reports of police brutality, including the use of live rounds and tear gas against demonstrators, and the mistreatment of paramedics, have further exacerbated the situation. The images of bodies lying on the streets of Nairobi and the storming of parliament are stark reminders of the gravity of the crisis.

In his address to the nation, President Ruto emphasized the threat to national security posed by the protests and criticized those he claimed had hijacked the conversation around the finance bill. However, his words did little to quell the unrest or provide a path forward.

As the military is deployed to support the police, human rights and civil society groups have condemned the heavy-handed response of the authorities. The call for change is not just about the finance bill but about addressing the broader issues of economic inequality, political accountability, and human rights.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Kenya and call for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. It is imperative that the government listens to the voices of its citizens and works towards meaningful reforms that can bring stability and prosperity to the nation. The current situation is unsustainable, and only through dialogue and genuine commitment to change can Kenya move forward.

Sadili Oval in solidarity.

The Power of the Kenyan Youth

Kenyans are expressing their dissatisfaction with the contentious Finance Bill, 2024. Despite peaceful protests, the Bill passed the Second Reading in Parliament1. Organizers have announced a 7-day anti-Finance Bill protest, culminating in a second round of demonstrations on Tuesday, the same day MPs will vote on the Bill. Activist Boniface Mwangi leads the movement, urging Kenyans to stand up against the legislation1.

Sadili Oval Sports Club: While not directly linked to the protests, is a social enterprise that empowers children and youth through sports and education, promoting well-being and a better future.

At Sadili Sports Academy, we believe in the power of the youth to drive positive change.  The energy and determination seen in the protests are a testament to the potential of young people to shape the future of our country. It is crucial that their voices are acknowledged and their concerns addressed.

Developing the Power of Sports in Africa, Sadili Oval Sports Club plays a vital role in community development by empowering children and youths through sports and education. Founded in Nairobi, Kenya, the Club focuses on holistic growth, promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and life skills. Their programs include soccer, basketball, and other sports, along with educational support. By nurturing young talents and fostering community engagement, Sadili contributes to a brighter future for the Kenyans.  The energy and determination seen in the protests are a testament to the potential of young people to shape the future of our country. It is crucial that their voices are acknowledged and their concerns addressed.

SADILI OVAL AFTER THE STORM

After weeks of relentless rain and recovery efforts, the Sadili Oval Sports Club is thrilled to announce the resumption of all tennis activities. The club's reopening is a testament to the enduring spirits of its members and the community.

The road to recovery was paved with challenges. The club once waterlogged courts have been restored, thanks to the tireless work of the staff.

“Seeing our courts ready for play again is incredibly rewarding,” shared club coach Mary.

In anticipation of the reopening, the club has implemented several upgrades. Enhanced drainage systems, new court surfaces, and refurbished amenities await the members.

“We are not just coming back, we are coming back stronger," said Dr.Elizabeth the G.M.

Most of our members have attested to the reopening of the club, and some of them have come to see if we are really opening.

The Sadili Oval Sports Club's resumption of activities is more than a return to normalcy, it is a leap forward. With facilities and a united community, the club is set to serve up its best season yet.
