Sadili Oval: Shaping the lives of children of Kibera through sports and life skills

"Necessity may be the mother of invention, but play is certainly the father", so said Roger von Oech, a contemporary American creativity guru. I couldn't agree more. Research shows that community  sport  programs  provide  children  marginalized  by  poverty, disability, family dissolution, ethno-cultural background and conflict with  training and team experiences to help develop effective social and communication skills, build positive relationships, make friends, and find social support.

This is exactly what the Kibera Tennis Court  offers, and it was no different on Saturday, 14th May 2016. The children played all sorts of games including basketball, tennis and hula hoop. They were guided by coaches from Sadili Oval Sports Academy, Trizah Mboya and Asha Adongo accompanied by one of Kenya's best basketball players, Zack Okong'o.

Seeing the children so happy and their coaches so relational and caring was extremely heart warming. The sense of community and level of resiliency displayed by these children once again reminded me why Sadili Oval believes in the power of sports.

Nahimana Shock At Smashers Challenge Cup

The second edition of this year’s Smashers Challenge Cup at Sadili Oval Sports Academy Langata, registered shocking defeat when 11 year old Sada Nahimana, trounced John Lutaaya v 6/7(5),1/6 the Boys/Girls Under 16s, causing major excitement, as she proceeded to the quarterfinal stage that will run tomorrow. John Lutaya also failed to qualify for the quarterfinals for the first time this year, after losing important points to Robert Kasombo (Kenya) 6/4,0/6[10-5], and David Mukhwana 6/2,6/2.

Other U16 matches saw regular top juniors, Henry Ayesiga (Uganda) and Shebani Kabura (Burundi) retire under the heat, to Kenya’s duo Josephat Garo and Olivier Kigotho, respectively.

In the girls 12 and Under, Alice Ayoma (Kenya) grabbed the top berth after winning oer Belinda Awino 7/6(5), 6/3 and Elizabeth Sheila (Kenya) 6/1 6/2. In the Boys Under 14, Davis Matanda beat Nigel Odhiambo 6/1 6/3, while Antony Owita beat Charles Ochieng 6/4 6/2 to book a place in the finals tomorrow.
